Last weekend the Pitiüses islands suffered a great loss: the
death of Joan Marí Cardona, historian and archivist canon with an
excellent trajectory in the area of culture and heritage of the Islands.
Recognised as a man of great intellectual and human values, Joan Marí
Cardona received many awards, amongst which worth mentioning are: the "Medalla
d'Or del Consell d'Eivissa i Formentera", the "Medalla d'Or de la comunitad
autònoma de les Illes Balears" and the "Creu de Sant Jordi de la
Generalitat de Catalunya".
As an historian, he held a tireless research in the history of Eivissa
and Formentera, producing an extraordinary work that is to be found in
his numerous books and articles. He also collaborated with the "Enciclopèdia
d'Eivissa i Formentera".
Within the civic area, he distinguished himself by his commitment to
the Pitius reality and as the president of the Institut d'Estudis Eivissencs
between 1978 and 1994.
As a person, he will always be remembered because of his goodness, humility
and working capacity.
