Exhibition dedicated to Catalan books
The exhibition hall of Fires i Congressos in Palma is holding until March 3 the thirteenth edition of the Setmana del Llibre en Català that, once more is full of editorial novelties and cultural proposals promoted by the Bookshop owners of Mallorca, the Council of Mallorca and the Balearic Government.

The programme of events started last Thursday with the traditional reading of the proclamation, this year given by Josep Palou called  "Els Països Catalans víctimes del colonialisme espanyol"; and last Friday, the journalist Planas Sanmartí presented the books "Palestina" and "Aroma àrab receptes i relats" by Salah Jamal.

On Saturday, Joan Florit from the UIB and Elena Vera of BalearWeb gave the conference "Internet Català: recursos en català a la xarxa". The talk was divided in three blocks.  In the first, Joan Florit made an social-linguistic analysis of the situation of the Catalan language on Internet. Elena Vera followed on the presence of Catalan on Internet in the Balearics and Pitiüses, analysing as an orientation, the webs that are indexed in the BalearWeb directory.  She explained that "of the 3,530 webs indexed on Mallorca, 1,157 contemplate the use of Catalan (not even 33%). On Menorca, of the 1,244 webs indexed,  492 offer information in Catalan (almost 40%). On Eivissa there is a total of 1,380 webs indexed of these only 429 use Catalan (just over 31%). Finally, on Formentera, we can find 802 webs indexed, of which 392 offer Catalan (nearly 49%). Finally, Joan Florit with a projector gave a virtual trip round some webs relating to the topic and gave a practical demonstration on the installation and function of the free Open Office 6, translated into Catalan by Softcatalà.
