The Ibizan poet and writer Marià Villangómez died on
Sunday, May 12, 2002, at 6.20 p.m., at the policlinic Nostra Senyora del
Rosari in Eivissa due to the cardiopulmonary illness that he suffered.
Marià Villangómez i Llobet (Eivissa, 1913) began writing
poems very young. In 1928 he moved to Barcelona to study Law, a degree
course that he ended in 1933. As from this time he began publishing poems
in Catalan in several publications and he moved to Valencia to study philology,
a degree course that he did not end because of his recruitment by the Franco
army during the Civil War. After the war he studied Teaching and worked
as teacher for over 20 years, first in Cornellà (1942-1946) and
later on Eivissa, namely in Sant Miquel, where he shared his time between
teaching and writing.
His literary and civic values have been widely recognised and in 1989
he was awarded with the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes.
