Recently BalearWeb has received many consultations from webmasters
who host their pages on the free service
BalearWeb
FREEmail, about the impossibility of updating their webs. They are
editors of web pages that after having send new contents to the server,
find old versions on the webs. Why? Is this a problem of BalearWeb?
The answer is clear: no, the cause of this inconvenience is Telefónica.
With a view to saving bandwidth, since January 10 Telefónica
is using a transparent "proxy-cache" that affects all the internauts who
have contracted an ADSL connection with this company, or with any of the
operators who use the same Telefónica network, such as Wanadoo.
The proxy-cache is an intermediate memory that stores for a certain
time a copy of the pages that the internauts visit, and when these pages
are visited again, either by the same user or by others, the memorised
page is shown instead of the real contents of the server. It is possible
to force the updating of the pages in the navigator by pressing the keys
Control + F5 (on Internet Explorer), or the key Shift (Capitals) and the
button "Reload" at the same time (on Netscape).
Information on the activation of the new proxy-cache can be found on
this
page of Telefónica. Those who speak about the many
inconveniences
generated by the new system, are
Asociación
de Internautas, the
Plataforma
Internauta, several
articles
of the weblog
Barrapunto.com and
many other media, such as the portal
Ayuda
ADSL.com, that explains
how
to complain against the proxy-cache of Telefónica. Different
tools have also been created online to
find
out if our connection is behind a proxy.
