By resolution 2994 (XXVII) of 15 December 1972, the General Assembly
designated 5 June as
World Environment
Day to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and enhance
the environment. That date recalls the opening day of the United Nations
Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm, 1972), which led to the
establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (
UNEP).
Coinciding with the celebration of the
International
Year of Freshwater , the theme of the World Environment Day 2003 will
be "Water: Two Billion People are Dying for It!".
