Posidonia sea-grasses, World Heritage Site
Sa Punta des Molí de Sant Antoni de Portmany is holding the exhibition "Les praderies de posidònia, patrimoni de tots", that synthesizes the importance of the posidonia fields in the marine ecosystem, the impacts that threaten it and the perspectives for its conservation.

The exhibition, that can be visited until December 20, 2001, has been carried out by the environment consultants Pandion SL, commissioned by  the General Direction for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Balearic Government, with the collaboration of Obra Social de Sa Nostra, the Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Council and the GEN-GOB Eivissa.

According to the organisers, "the ocean investigation has demonstrated in the latest years, that the posidonia has an enormous importance for the health of the marine environment, but that this ecosystem is threatened by the intensive use of the coast. The waste that contaminates the water, the building of quays, and ports that change the maritime currents and alter the dynamics of the coast, the massive extraction of sand from the seabed, the repeated anchoring of numerous boats over the same area, the dredge fishing, the introduction of exotic species such as the Caulerpa taxifolia... are some of the causes of destruction of the posidonia. The fields of posidonia in certain areas of the coast of Eivissa have been declared by the UNESCO as World Heritage.

As a complement to the exhibition the monitors of the GEN-GOB Eivissa are offering a guided tour aimed at the schools round the bay of Sant Antonio as far as the beach of Es Pouet.
