Paintings, drawings and etchings by Pere Daura

The Cultural Hall of Sa Nostra in Eivissa is holding from April 9 til May 3 the exhibition "Pere Daura i les Balears. Pintures, dibuixos i gravats".

The Catalan artist, Pere Daura (1896-1976) was born by chance in Ciutadella during a holiday his parents spent there, and from 1917 to 1920 hi lived on Menorca, namely in Es Castell, where he was destined for his military service.  In 1932, Daura spent another short time on Menorca, together with his wife, Louise Blair, after spending a winter painting on Mallorca.

In 1937, when he was 41, Daura became a volunteer in the International Brigades that participated in the Spanish Civil War to fight against Franco's army and to defend the Republic. After being seriously injured in the Battle of Teruel, he returned to France to recover, settling shortly after in Virginia (USA), acquiring American citizenship, and he did not return to live in Spain.

Martha Daura, the artist's daughter, has wished for her father's work to be represented in the places where he lived. It is thanks to her generosity that today the work by Pere Daura can be found in museums in Paris, Toulouse, Perpinya, Barcelona, Montserrat, several cities of the United States, where he died, and in Ciutadella, where in 1996 the Sala Daura was opened in the Diocese Museum.

The exhibition that is now being presented on Eivissa, groups basically drawings and etchings, deposited at the Ciutadella Diocese Museum, carried out by Pere Daura during his military service on Menorca.
