Summer, as well as a time of heat, is also the moment when taxes are
usually paid. Only the Pitiusa municipality,
Santa
Eulària, facilitates the payment of these receipts via Internet.
The system was set up at the end of last summer, without much publicity
(although over 20 people used it) and this year it is the first time that
the service has been accessible from the beginning via
this
web.
As well as the online payment of taxes, that can be carried out via
credit card, bank transfer or direct debit on the tax payer's current account,
the individual debts with the Town Council can also be consulted,
including delay interest. To use this service of the Santa Eulària
web, a
municipal
receipt for the years 2000 or 2001 and the taxpayer's DNI are
needed.
The investment for this venture was 30.000 euros (five million pesetas).
The municipal comptroller, Vicent Marí, confirms that the main users
of the service are "people under 35 and used to moving around Internet"
and that, as with electronic commerce, "many are dubious about the payment
by credit card on the net" although "our system is very safe."
"Many people ask for this service and there is still room for improvement",
such as a better graphic image of the web which is rather poor at present.
The voluntary period for tax payment in Santa Eulària finishes at
the end of the month (afterwards a surcharge of 20% is applied).
