The controversial Spanish Internet Law still in the news

The Spanish Law for services of the Information society and electronic commerce (LSSICE), popularly known as the LSSI, is still in the news. The controversial norm regulates the services of the information society and electronic contracts stipulating the obligations and responsibilities of the so called suppliers of services of the information society.

Since it came in force, on October 12, the new Law has generated many doubts. With the aim of summarising and clarifying the new Law BalearWeb published in October the article "Everything about the new Internet Law" defining who is affected by the law, the main stipulated obligations, the responsibilities and imposed sanctions.

In view of the great number of opinions against the Law and the international press coverage of the closure of web sites promoted by Kriptópolis, web portal that has led the opposition to the law, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology has initiated an informative campaign, including a web and the distribution of informative leaflets about the most important aspects of the LSSI. The general director for "Desarrollo de la Sociedad de la Información", Leopoldo González-Echenique, admitted during the presentation of the campaign that the Law will need to be modified regarding unsolicited communications, to adapt it to the new European Directive 2002/58/EC concerning the processing of personal data and the protection of privacy in the electronic communications sector.
